How to Get new Green Card if Lost

US green card

The green card, also known as a Permanent Resident Card, is an important document. It indicates your legal status to stay and work in the US. Without the card, it will be difficult for you to travel abroad or to prove your status as a legal immigrant. Therefore, if your Green Card is lost or stolen, you should take steps to replace it immediately.

Steps to Get new Green Card if Lost

1File the I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, online or by using the paper version. Check the eligibility requirements before you apply online.

2If you are outside the U.S., contact the nearest U.S. consulate, USCIS office or port of entry before attempting to file a Form I-90. The filing instructions may be different for individuals who are outside the U.S.

3Submit the form along with the correct filing fee and the required documents. Check the USCIS website for detailed instructions.

4Along with the form, also send a copy of the front side of your green card, if you have it. If you don't have a copy of your green card, then write a letter explaining when and possibly where you lost your green card along with some supporting document that proves your identity.

5Once your form is checked for completeness and approved, you will receive notification about your biometrics appointment and the interview.

6Attend the biometrics and interview on the appointed date.

7After your application is approved and once the interview is over, you will receive a new green card valid for ten years.
