Trump Appeals to Farmers over Immigrant Workers

On Saturday, President Donald Trump said that more guest workers would soon be allowed to enter the US to assist farmers, who he admitted may suffer some short-term difficulties because of his attempts to renegotiate trade deals with several foreign partners.

The comments were made at a political rally in Washington Township, Michigan. Trump’s pledge to bring in more immigrant guest workers to help farmers could come as a surprise to many of his supporters, who tend to be critical of the current immigration system in the US. The President and many of the top advisors in the White House have been promoting changes to laws in recent times, which would make it more difficult for low-skilled workers to gain entry to the country.

But, the President argues that American workers will not be adversely affected by bringing in foreign workers using the H-2B US visa system, as there is currently a dearth of available workers for farmers. Trump says that unemployment in the US is so low that bringing in guest workers on US visas is necessary, but that their time in the country will be limited to that of their work stints.

The crowd, which had loudly cheered his repeated desire for tougher immigration enforcement, including the much-talked-about wall on the border between the US and Mexico, did not appear enamored of the idea though, giving only lackluster applause.
