The city of New Orleans will be removed from the list of sanctuary cities in the US if Louisiana’s highest legal authority has anything to do with it. Jeff Landry, the state’s attorney general, says that the status of New Orleans as a sanctuary city has made it a magnet for undocumented immigrants.
Landry told the Fox Business Network that there are many reasons why he wants to see ‘the Big Easy’ taken off the list. Landry says that the US has a major problem with illegal immigration. This is particularly the case with those undocumented immigrants who come into the country and commit crimes while victimizing American citizens. Landry adds that law enforcement officers are effectively banned from cooperating with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement in such cities. This results in criminal undocumented immigrants wreaking havoc in the US and its communities without being deported, a situation that Landry views as a crisis of public safety.
Landry pointed to the death of Spencer Chauvin, the St John the Baptist Fire Chief, who was killed by an undocumented immigrant who lost control of the bus he was driving without a license.
Landry also points out that his ideas have the support of several members of Congress. Representatives Culberson and Gowdy have both put pressure on the Obama administration to withdraw or withhold funds, such as federal grants, to cities that operate sanctuary city policies, and by doing so violate federal law.
