Jeff Sessions says that the US should adopt the immigration policy already used by Canada while giving his support to stricter criteria that will cut down on the number of ‘illiterate’ immigrants coming into the country. The Attorney General also reiterated that describing President Donald Trump as ‘anti-immigration’ is erroneous and that the President wants to see people coming into the US who have the education and skills necessary for them to prosper there.
On Tuesday, in an interview on Tucker Carlson Tonight, Sessions said that a lawful immigration system is good for the US and its people, and that admittance of new immigrants should be based on the current immigration system in Canada. He added that bringing in unskilled immigrants who often cannot even read, not only ensures that they will struggle and likely be unsuccessful in the country but is of no benefit to the US and that such a system needs to end.
Sessions also voiced his support for the President’s call to end the current US visa lottery system, calling it an ‘absurd’ and ‘ridiculous’ program. Trump has been criticized for inflammatory remarks about poor nations, such as Haiti, but Sessions says he is trying to improve the system and says it is unbelievable that anyone would try to resist necessary attempts at reform.
Sessions also reiterated his assertion that new immigrants need to be vetted to ensure they are not criminals or threats to national security and are people who will flourish in the US.
