US Republican lawmakers seem keen to give government funding to the wall on the border between the US and Mexico that has long been promised by President-Elect, Donald Trump without waiting for him to manage to make Mexico itself pay for it. One senior Senator calls it an effective method of keeping out undocumented immigrants and compares it to the apartheid wall of the Israeli regime.
Wisconsin Senator, Ron Johnson, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affair Committee chairman, is one of the top Republicans who is backing the funding of the multi-million dollar scheme by the federal government. According to the Washington Post on Friday, Johnson said he was impressed by the fence system he had seen on the border between Israel and Palestinian territories.
The Post suggests that the willingness of the Republican Party to fund the wall to stop undocumented immigrants with the use of taxpayer money could clash with their long-held wish to rein in government spending. Many Republican lawmakers see no such conflict, though, with Indiana Congressman Luke Messer, who is also the House Republican Policy Committee chairman, saying that spending billions would be justified on policies that are appropriate for the US.
Donald Trump made a tweet later on Friday, in which he again slammed the ‘dishonest media’ by noting that any money spent on the wall by the US government will be paid back by the government of Mexico later on.
