With debate continuing to heat up about the Trump administration’s immigration policies, Florida Congresswoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, hosted a roundtable discussion on Monday with other representatives and local leaders in Sunrise to discuss the controversial issue, particularly the separation of immigrant parents and their children.
The Democrat lawmaker spoke with immigration attorneys, as well as representatives from the likes of Americans for Immigrant Justice, Mujeres Latinas, United We Dream, the Hispanic Unity of Florida, and the United Way of Broward County. The meeting gave those involved the chance to brainstorm and talk about the facilities run by the US government, which are holding the offspring of detained immigrants. Wasserman Schultz says that the solution to the problem needs to come from a separate law as well as an immigration bill and that the two major political parties will need to come together on the issue.
Wasserman Schultz also criticized Congressional Republicans as well as Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, saying that they can talk all they like about how much they care and want to change the current policy but that if a separate immigration bill, which has no effect on the policy, is passed instead, it will be very clear that they do not.
The Democrat Congresswoman says she will be heading to Texas to get a personal look at the unfolding of the immigration issue. Representative, Frederica Wilson is currently visiting Brownsville in the state for similar reasons.
