A Republican Senator, hoping to allay fears in India about President Donald Trump’s immigration policy, has said that there are checks and balances in place in the US to prevent abuse of the system. She pointed to the blocking of the travel ban issued by the White House by a federal Judge, as evidence of this.
In February, the request by the Justice Department for the President’s controversial travel ban to be immediately reinstated was denied by a US appeals court. Illinois Republican Senator, Pamela Althoff, points out that Congress was not in the slightest bit enraged by the court’s decision and that she doubts Trump believed his policies would ever be supported by all his colleagues in the Republican Party.
Althoff made the comments in response to a question about India’s worries over the Trump administration’s immigration and US visa policies, particularly the issue of H-1B US visas. Althoff says there is a multitude of diverse voices in the Trump administration that the President has to pay attention to, and his decisions will not be supported by all members of the Republican Party, given the varied ideologies in the organization.
Interacting with the general public at the American Center in New Delhi, Althoff noted that those who govern have to work with individuals who may have different points of view. Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has already spoken out on the issue and talked privately with President Trump.
