A poll that was conducted by Quinnipiac University shows that as many as seven out of ten voters have little faith in there being real hope of immigration reform, according to NBC. The majority of the registered voters who responded to the poll doubt that comprehensive immigration reform will be passed by the summer of this year.
However, the level of optimism is much higher among both Hispanics and Democrats, who the poll indicates are far more confident about the chances for such reform, with two thirds of them believing that a bill will be successfully passed by the end of summer. Fifty-four percent of voters also believe that undocumented immigrants who are already living in the United States deserve the chance to be awarded US citizenship.
The poll follows a degree of unrest after worries over border security and, indeed, the state of the proposed immigration legislation, with many expressing concern over comments that were made by Republican Senator Marco Rubio. Rubio has noted that the legislation drafted by the Gang of Eight, of which he himself was a member, will most likely undergo some changes in the House of Representatives if it is to be passed.
Although fixing the nation’s broken immigration is very important to both the Senate and the House of Representatives, there seems to be a long road still ahead when it comes to the question of citizenship for illegal immigrants, while Rubio has noted that issues such as border security should be left up to Congress to decide.
