Be Prepared to Pass the K-1 Fiancee Visa Interview
The K-1 fiancée visa is the visa used when a US citizen marries a national from another country. The K-1 visa is designed to allow the non-US citizen to enter the US for the purpose of marriage. Once the couple are married, the fiancée visa holder can adjust status in order to get a green card. Marriage is considered one of the fastest ways to get a green card. However, the US government is concerned about growing instances of immigration fraud, perpetuated by people who marry US citizens solely for the purpose of obtaining a green card.
In order to reduce instances of immigration fraud, all fiancée visa applicants are subject to K-1 fiancée visa interviews with immigration officials. These interviews are intended to determine whether a relationship is valid. Due to growing concerns about immigration fraud, these interviews can be intense and applicants may be subject to some scrutiny. The interviews are usually the final step of the K-1 visa application process. However, they can be nerve-wracking, as consular officials will usually ask personal questions and will be tasked with deciding whether the relationship is genuine. As well, consular officials have the ability to deny a visa, ask for more information, or grant a visa, so a great deal depends on the fiancée visa interview.
The fiancée visa can last 30 minutes or as little as ten minutes. In many consulates, there is a private room where the interview can be conducted. In general, the couple will not be together, which can make the interview more nerve-wracking.In many cases, the interview will include only the consular official, the national fiancée and a translator, if needed. Some consulates do allow the US citizen fiancée to attend the interview, but this is not always the case. If children are applying for a K-2 visa, they must also attend the interview.
The consular official will try to determine whether the relationship is genuine before granting a K-1 visa. To do this, the official may ask about living arrangements and will ask the fiancée about his or her partner. It is therefore important for the fiancée to know all about their US citizen fiancée, including details about his or her life, family, past, employment, residence, and so forth. As well, the consular official will try to determine whether the national fiancée has good mora lcharacter and is genuinely interested in the US citizen. As a result, the fiancée may be asked about his or her past, past relationships, family, and other details.
