President Donald Trump slammed the current immigration laws of the US at the White House on Tuesday, saying that no other country in the world has immigration laws quite as stupid as those in operation in the US. The President made the comment during an event intended to try and combat the MS-12 criminal gang.
Trump said that the current immigration laws of the nation need to be changed, as entry into the US is too easy and in most cases, undocumented immigrants are then just released when they have been caught. He added that such laws exist nowhere else in the world and that changing them is not about politics or partisan squabbling between Democrats and Republicans, but about simple common sense.
On Tuesday, the President also pointed out that gang members are about to get straight through the border between the US and Mexico and use the nation’s ‘broken’ immigration system to find new recruits. He linked the criminal organization to the need to build a wall on the border, one of his key Presidential campaign promises. Combating MS-13 has been one of the main focuses of Trump’s first year in office, together with his tough stance on immigration.
The meeting was also attended by chief of staff, John Kelly, and Kirstjen Nielsen, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, as well as Customs and Border Protection commissioner, Kevin McAleenan, and Francis Cissna, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services director.
