On Monday, President Donald Trump vowed to allow people who love the US to continue to gain entry into the country. But, he defended his restrictions on refugees and immigrants as he visited the US Central Command for the first time. Trump reaffirmed his support for NATO in front of troops and military leaders while giving a speech laced with references to the need for homeland security, even as a court battle plays out over his controversial immigration ban.
Trump declared that strong programs were necessary to keep out those who wish to destroy the US but to allow in those immigrants who love the country, adding that security, justice, and freedom will prevail. On Sunday, Trump spoke with Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO, with the two discussing ways to encourage the organization’s allies to meet their spending commitments in regards to defense, according to a White House statement. They also talked about the security challenges faced by NATO nations and about the Ukraine crisis.
The trans-Atlantic military alliance was once dismissed as being obsolete by the new US President, who also noted that decisions as to whether to protect other countries in NATO would be made depending on their fulfilment of their obligations to the US.
Trump also gave his support to US soldiers, vowing to protect and never let down those who protect America. Also in attendance was Trump’s national security advisor, Michael Flynn.
