In many cases, someone applying for a nonimmigrant visa must file Form I-864 (Affidavit of Support) to prove that there is someone in the US who will support them financially. This form is used to ensure that a nonimmigrant visa holder will not be tempted to take illegal work and will not become a burden on US social assistance programs. However, if someone is exempt from filing Form I-864 — because they have a passive income, an income outside the US, independent means, or other reasons — that applicant can file USCIS Form I-864W (Intending Immigrant's Affidavit of Support Exemption). Form I-864W essentially shows that the applicant does not need a sponsor.
