Adopting a child from another country can be very complex. If a US citizen is about to adopt a child or has already adopted a foreign child who is an orphan, it is possible to have the child declared an immediate relative of the US citizen. This is advantageous as it allows the child to enter the US more quickly. In cases of an orphaned child, this may be important to ensure good continuing care for the child. To apply for this process, the adoptive parent/US citizen must file USCIS form I-600 (Petition to Classify Orphan as an Immediate Relative).
