Immigrants have enriched the American culture and the successive waves of immigrants are keeping the country young. Like many believe, immigrants do not push out Americans from jobs, they only fill jobs that the Americans are not willing to fill. Jennifer Mulhern Granholm, who will celebrate her birthday on February 5, served as Michigan’s 47th governor between 2003 and 2011. She is a Canadian American politician, educator and author. She naturalized and obtained U.S. citizenship in 1980.
Paul Chu, a Chinese-born American physicist, will celebrate his birthday on February 12. He is well-known for his work in superconductivity, magnetism, and dielectrics. He is now serving as Professor of Physics and T. L. L. Temple Chair of Science at the University of Houston.
Richard Blanco, who will celebrate his birthday on February 15, is a Spanish American poet. He is also a public speaker, author and civil engineer. He immigrated to the U.S. as a child with his Cuban exile family. He was the youngest person to be the U.S. inaugural poet for the second inauguration of President Obama. He was also the first Latino to be named the inaugural poet.
Leslie Nielsen, a Canadian American actor, was born on February 11, 1926. He has appeared in more than two hundred films and television programs. Top Leslie Nielsen movies include The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, Airplane! and The Poseidon Adventure. He died of Pneumonia on November 28, 2010.
Levi Strauss, who was born in Germany in 1829, was a German American businessman who founded Levi Strauss & Co. This is the very first company to manufacture blue jeans. He was generous to people who were in need and he had provided funds for scholarships at the University of California. As he was not married, he left his business to his nephews. He died on September 26, 1902.
