Supporters and opponents of immigration reform are both worried about the intentions of President Donald Trump. While the supporters are furious over the President’s actions and want him to offer undocumented immigrants a path to legal status, opponents are afraid that Trump may not keep his election promises like building a wall and deporting undocumented immigrants.
Homeland Security Chief Rejects Deportation Force Notion
John Kelly, the Secretary of U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), rejected the idea that his agency is creating a “deportation force,” in his interview on the NBC television program. He said that the DHS has plans to hire 10,000 new Customs and Immigration Enforcement officials and 5000 new border security agents. He said that the Trump administration focusses on deporting criminals.
Overstayed Visas Main Source of US Illegal Immigration
DHS data shows that around 527,127 nonimmigrants who came to the U.S. either by ship or plane and should have left the U.S. in 2015, did not do so. According to the Associated Press, those who come to the U.S. on nonimmigrant visas and overstay them are the main source of illegal immigration. Read more.
