President Obama will head to Nevada tomorrow to sign an executive order and enact his immigration reform plan. He will sign the presidential memorandum at the same Del Sol High School in Las Vegas where he unveiled his immigration plans, two years ago. He will sign the reform plan that would grant deferred action status to the undocumented parents who have children born in the U.S. or who are legal permanent residents and to the young undocumented immigrants who illegally entered the U.S. before 2010.
His plan will be implemented this spring and once it is implemented, all the eligible undocumented immigrants will be allowed to file applications for deferred action status. Those who qualify will be granted a temporary relief from deportation for three years. He said that those who meet the criteria and have clean criminal records can come out and apply for legal status. He also warned that, if they are criminals, they will be deported.
Obama, in his address highlighted a DREAMer, Astrid Silva. Silva said that she felt complete relief when the president laid out his reform plan that would protect more than 4 million immigrants from deportation, according to CNN. Astrid Silva is an undocumented immigrant who was brought to the U.S. by her parents. Obama in his address said that he is using his executive authority to help immigrants like Silva. Obama in his speech said, “Astrid was brought to America when she was 4 years old. Her only possessions were a cross, her doll and the frilly dress she had on.”
Silva watched the President’s speech with her father who is now in deportation proceedings. Silva and her father will be protected from deportation as Silva will qualify for temporary lawful status under DACA and her father for temporary reprieve from deportation as his son is a U.S. citizen and he has lived in the U.S. for five years. Silva will meet President Obama in Las Vegas tomorrow when he head to Del Sol High School to sign the presidential memorandum.
